Vigil for Victims of Hate and Violence on 2/19/12

The 14th Annual observance of the Vigil for Victims of Hate and Violence is Sunday, February, 19, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. The vigil will be at the steps of the State Capitol in Montgomery, with the Train Shed as the alternate location in the event of rain.

The vigil includes a free concert by the Shouting Stones, beginning at 3:00 p.m. The keynote speaker this year is attorney Sam Wolfe from the Southern Poverty Law Center. The recipient of this year’s Billy Jack Gaither Humanitarian Award is James Robinson, founder and Executive Director of GLBT Advocacy and Youth Services, Inc., in Huntsville, Alabama.

This event honors the memory of Billy Jack Gaither, who was brutally murdered on February 19,1999 because he was gay. Yet, Alabama’s hate crimes law still excludes crimes based on sexual orientation or identity.  More information – Requires Adobe Reader
